I realize that under ideal conditions stock internals will handle most anything. When we see a problem with the stock internals its always due to some problem, not the power out-put itself. The cast pistons can't take the shock of detonation which becomes a stronger force as power levels increase. As power levels increase so do the chances of problems occurring. A higher power car is more sensitive to fuel quality and pressure, tuning, etc. And in general there are just more things to go wrong. When things do go wrong, or deviate from the ideal conditions, its nice to have some stonger parts in your motor that are more forgiving of the abnormal stresses seen in these situations. If everything always went according to plan then we wouldn't even recommend anything over stock internals. Since that isn't the case if you are already rebuilding your engine we usually recommend forged pistons over 500 rwhp. Its our opinion that the stock rods are plenty strong enough and we have never seen one damaged from too much power output, only hydrolocking or some catastrophic failure. Most of the aftermarket rods are lighter and just as strong if not stronger. The weight savings is our primary reason for using them in our builds, plus using some of the beefier designs gives us some piece of mind in the higher hp cars. The "what if we are wrong about the stock rods being stong enough" factor.
